Bereavement Counselling Guidelines
My primary aim as your counsellor is to provide a safe and supportive space for you to share and find ways of working through the difficulties you face in your life. Together we will aim to find clarity and understanding, and explore what you feel would be useful and helpful.
There are some practical considerations to working together within counselling:
Counselling sessions are generally based on the direction that you as client want to go. I'm facilitating a safe space, ask questions and use other tools to help you, but you are always in control of what you would like or not like to do.
The whole session belongs to you, whether you choose to attend or not, and I will be there for the duration of the time. If you arrive partway through the session I will see you for the remainder of the time. If you do not attend the session this will incur normal charges (but see cancellation policy below).
During or at the end of sessions, we will review our time together : how it is going, what is helpful and what isn’t, are you getting what you need, how you are experiencing me, etc.
Outside sessions we will not have contact with each other, unless it is to make a new appointment, cancellation or rescheduling arrangements.
We will make a verbal agreement as to how we handle seeing one another in public, in line with both ethical considerations and personal boundaries.
After our initial contact and before an agreed first session, I will send you information by email which includes our agreement and your consent to the guidelines mentioned above. This agreement is for you to confirm before we have our first session.

Cancellations and Breaks
If for any reason you are unable to attend a session, please could you give me at least 48-hours’ notice. We can try and re-arrange the session for another time that week or cancel. Cancellations with less than 48 hour notice of beginning of the agreed session time, will be charged as normal. We can try and find an alternative time, but if that is not possible I will need to charge you. If you miss a session without cancellation you will be charged for the session. Special arrangements regarding missed sessions and payment can be made.
I will be available for you with the exception of holidays and occasional times when I am attending training. I will give you as much notice as possible if I am unable to make a session. If I need to cancel due to illness I will let you know as soon as possible and will try to offer an alternative time. Sessions cancelled on my part will not be charged.
Endings
Either party may decide to end the counselling arrangement. In either case, there will be a period of notice given which would allow for an appropriate conclusion. There will be at least one ‘ending’ session, but it's always something that will be agreed upon by both of us.
Code of Practice
Although I'm not registered with the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP), I agree to work within the BACP Ethical Framework for the Counselling Professions 2026. See here for more information.
Complaints
If at any point, within our agreed arrangement of sessions, either of us have a complaint about the counselling, it will be the responsibility of each of us to raise the issue first in a session, prior to seeking external support to resolve it. If external support is required to resolve a grievance, we both agree to maintain a professional approach in presenting the issue to a third party.
Confidentiality and Supervision
Confidentiality is imperative to counselling. Everything that happens and is said in your sessions is kept confidential. However, it is standard professional practice to make session notes (after sessions) and to discuss work with a supervisor. I may also submit material to accreditors/trainers for professional support or for further professional development. In these instances, your identity will always remain anonymous.
Exceptions to confidentiality
I will always attempt to gain your consent prior to sharing information, if possible. In rare cases, a disclosure may occur to other parties, without your consent, if there is good reason to believe that you or others are at imminent risk.
Exceptions to the rule of confidentiality occur when:
I have your consent to disclose personal information
I believe that you or a third party are in danger of serious harm
I would be liable to civil or criminal court procedures if the information were not disclosed
GDPR
Your information (contact details, emails, GP details and session notes) are kept securely, via encrypted, password protected, electronic files to which only I have access. Your information is kept for a maximum of 5 years after ending counselling, before being securely destroyed.
I ask for your permission to indicate your consent. Should you have any concerns regarding this agreement, you are welcome to explore those concerns with me prior to your consent.
